Things couldn't have gone much better for the United States in its World Cup opener.

The bizarre scenes - which left fans momentarily confused - occurred in the second half with Paraguay 3-0 down and desperately chasing a way back into the game in Inglewood, California.

In terms of raw numbers, that seems to be right: FIFA reported it sold 3.2 million tickets in 2022; 2.8 million in 2018; and 3.1 million in 2014. NPR reported the 1994 World Cup, also hosted in the U.S., set the standing attendance record at 3.5 million, with game after game filled to capacity.

Never mind the fact that Canada didn't win: The World Cup co-hosts made history Friday and earned their first point.

The 2026 World Cup is going to feel very different from the tournaments fans have grown used to. Bigger, longer, and packed with more countries than ever before, it will officially become the largest World Cup in football history.
